Moses Terhemba Tsenongu

Moses Tsenôngu’s has a passion for the collection of the hitherto almost totally uncollected Benue Valley oral literary materials. He has a record 350 video- and 300 audio-recorded interviews/performances of Idoma, Igede, Igala, Mada, Gwandara, Yoruba and Hausa (etc) oral artists. But the ethnic group whose oral literary materials have received most of his attention is the Tiv. The performances of most Tiv poets, living or dead, have been collected: Aginde Agena, Bosua Uga, Yatsav Ugôh, Maza Nomhwange, Jiagwei Adamgbe, Ikyaater Uge, Anande Amende, Iorrumun Ankya, Ayoo Angwe, Bam Ginde, Tarker Golozo, Nungwa Caghshol, Tôndu Kumbul, Anche Igbyaaze, Amee Ijôrpo, Iyough Ute, Mtsem Achaver, Zaye Afati, Obadiah Orkor, Gbaseghera Dajo, Atayo Koko, Agile Kough, Hemen man Dondu, Pevkyaa Zegi, Orshio Adavker, Yanmuel Yashi, Iorgyer Igbya, Ajo Agôô, Kuje Iyum, Faga Adinge, Oliver Ayeh, Amee Yongu, Agugu Igbyakumbul – the list continues. Those artists that are still alive have been interviewed concerning their art while the assistants, relations or friends of deceased artists have responded to interview questions concerning dead performers. This documentation of Tiv oral literature is an ongoing project.

Another ongoing work by Moses Tsenôngu is his PhD on “Oral Poetry as ‘Logistics’: A Study of the Tiv Ibiamegh Poems of Amee Ijôrpo” at University of Jos, Nigeria. Other ongoing projects include Tributes to Tiv Oral Poets (brief biographies of numerous Tiv oral poets) and Colonel Joe Akaahan: The Forgotten Soldier (a biography of Nigeria’s third indigenous Chief of Army Staff)

Moses Tsenôngu is also working towards establishing the Benue Valley Folklore Society (BVFS), an NGO that would aim at the collection, documentation and preservation of folklore materials in the Benue Valley region.
